How Our Students Spend Their Break

Our students spend their breaks from school in a variety of ways. Since the break is three full weeks, many of our students leave the slum communities to stay with relatives in “the village." These are the rural areas outside of the city where kids are able to escape the tight conditions of the slums and spend time with extended family. Many parents prefer their children to be outside of the slums during these holidays so that they do not fall victim to the many threats and temptations of the slum.

Younger students who remain in the slums typically help their parents with small tasks at their workplaces. Older high school students are able to get their own work experience with local businesses. Currently we have a student who is learning how to repair electronics and another student who is working in a hair salon.

Regardless of where students are during the breaks, they all have to spend some time reviewing their school work and getting ready for the next school term. We always try to identify students who are falling behind so that they can get caught up before going back to school.

The breaks between school terms is also our chance to catch up with the students personally. We hear about their school experience, any challenges they may be facing, offer guidance and counseling, and disciple them in the truth of God's Word. It is always a joy to spend time with these students and see how they are growing.
