Student Highlight: Merina Kisakye
Meet Merina! She has been part of the SONBT family since 2022 and is currently in her final year of primary school. This is one of the most challenging years of school for students in Uganda as they have to pass the national exams that will allow them to continue to secondary school.
Merina was taken to Katanga slum by her parents when she was just 3 years old. Her father works as a car mechanic while her mother works as a tailor out of their home. Katanga hasn't been an easy place for Merina to grow up. She is saddened by the open sewage trenches and general disregard of hygiene in the community.
On the other hand, Merina loves the environment at school and always looks forward to being with her friends she has made there. She is grateful to be in the SONBT program because she was previously in and out of school due to inconsistent school fee payments.
Merina has wonderful goals for the future. She wants to become a midwife! She told us about her aunt who wasn't able to finish her midwifery course, so it is Merina's desire to fulfill her aunt's dream in her place. We are confident that the SONBT scholarship program is an essential step in making that dream possible.
Thank you for your prayers and support that have enabled students like Merina to get a quality education and pursue their dreams for the future!
